Product description

Striking demonstration, where a small amount of cotton ignites thanks to added energy.

Place something highly flammable at the bottom of the cylinder and quickly press down the piston. The energy you add during the compression means that the volume in the cylinder decreases, which, according to the ideal gas law, results in the temperature increasing. If enough energy is used in the compression, the object in the cylinder ignites.
You can also show that oxygen is needed during combustion by placing a larger quantity of this highly flammable substance in the cylinder and trying to ignite it two times, one after the other. Show that the piston must be removed from the cylinder allowing fresh air to enter before ignition is possible again.
Any organic material can be used as fuel, if it is dry enough. Examples of materials that can be used are cotton, paper napkins, tinder or small pieces of carbon.

Material: Wooden base plate, plastic cylinder and metal piston.
Dimensions: Base plate 10x10 cm. Total height approx. 25 cm.
Accessories: A small piece of cotton and a small piece of paper napkin enclosed.
Manual in English included.
