Exciting experiment which can give rise to intensive discussions.
Two apparently identical metal cylinders are released through the tube. One falls very slowly, the other drops like a stone.
This is because one of the metal cylinders is a super-strong magnet, while the other is not magnetic at all. When the magnet falls through the copper tube, currents are induced which give rise to magnetic fields which cause braking.
Equipment: 2 x neodymium cylinders with rubber-coated ends, one cylinder magnetised. Slotted copper tube, coated on the inside with a transparent plastic tube. 2 x rubber covers.
Dimensions: Cylinders: Length: 20 mm, diameter: 12 mm. Tubes: Length: 325 mm, diameter: 17 mm.
