A fascinating demonstration where the flames reflect a standing wave.
Measure the wavelength and determine the sonic speed.
Have LPG flow into one end of the tube and trickle out through the 29 holes on the top of the tube. Light the gas.
A speaker is mounted at one end of the tube. Measure it with a sine signal and adjust the frequency to form a standing wave inside the tube. The height of the flames will reflect the standing wave thanks to the pressure differences in the LPG inside the tube – fascinating!
Measure the difference between the nodes to calculate the wavelength and sonic speed.
The Music adapter for the Rubens’ tube accessory (art. no.: 56037) – ordered separately – allows you to make the flames dance to the music from your smartphone.
