Show how the sound in a singing tube can be "poured across" into a beaker and then back again.
Fascinating experiments with heat and sound.
Hold the tube vertically and use a burner to heat inside the lower part of the tube. The tube is moved to one side after approx. 10 s, and this generates a strong tone. This is because there is a metal mesh inside the tube which glows hot. This mesh heats the air, which then rises and the air flow generated creates resonance inside the tube. If the tube is held horizontally, the air flow is interrupted and the sound disappears. When the tube is returned to the vertical position, the sound comes back again. So you can pretend to pour the sound into a beaker and then pour it back into the tube.
